Euphorbia amygd. var. robbiae, commonly known as Wood Spurge, is a robust evergreen perennial that adds a vibrant splash of green to Irish gardens throughout the year. Its adaptability and striking appearance make it a popular choice for both formal and naturalistic settings.

Height/Spread: This variety of Euphorbia can grow to a height of approximately 60-90 cm (24-35 inches) and has a spreading habit, usually reaching a width of about 90-120 cm (35-47 inches). Its dense, vigorous growth creates a lush and attractive ground cover.

Position: Wood Spurge thrives in various positions, from full sun to partial shade. In the Irish climate, it is well-suited to both sunny and shaded areas of the garden. It can tolerate different light conditions, making it a versatile option for various spots in the landscape.

Soil: Euphorbia amygd. var. robbiae is not particularly fussy about soil types, as long as the soil is well-draining. It can tolerate a wide range of soil pH levels and adapts well to both clay and loamy soils. However, it's crucial to avoid waterlogged conditions, as the plant prefers soils with good drainage.

Flowering Season: This Euphorbia variety produces unique chartreuse-yellow flowers in late spring to early summer. The small, lime-colored flowers are held in large, rounded clusters called cymes, creating a striking contrast against the glossy dark green foliage.

Uses: Wood Spurge is valued for its ability to form an attractive ground cover, suppressing weeds and providing year-round interest. Its evergreen nature ensures that it remains visually appealing even in winter. However, gardeners should be cautious as the plant's sap can cause skin irritation, so it's advisable to handle it with care.

Specify in the Irish climate: Euphorbia amygd. var. robbiae is well-suited to the Irish climate, where it thrives in the mild, temperate conditions. Its ability to adapt to different light and soil conditions makes it an excellent addition to Irish gardens. Its evergreen presence and early-season flowers make it a valuable asset to brighten up the landscape in the spring when many other plants are still awakening from winter dormancy.
